Test cameras and lenses with compatible equipment before buying and inspect the actual images. Exact model, mount, optical condition and accessories matter more than a shutter-count figure alone or a photograph of a powered-on display.

How do you document a camera and lens test?

Bring a compatible camera or known-working lens and a suitable memory card. Check model and mount before fitting anything. Photograph a detailed subject using several focus positions and apertures; inspect the files enlarged rather than relying on the preview.

Record only functions actually tested, such as autofocus, zoom, aperture control, stabilisation and saving files. Photograph visible damage or haze without claiming a definite repair diagnosis. Do not clean the sensor or dismantle equipment for a buying check; leave untested functions marked untested.

Hypothetical example: camera bundle without a charger

Suppose a bundle includes a camera, lens and battery but no charger. Value the camera and lens separately using suitable sold comparisons first; check what comparable bundles include to avoid counting the lens twice.

Find a compatible charger including shipping and budget that cost. If a flat battery prevents testing, there is also unresolved functional risk. The price of a fully tested bundle is then not a like-for-like comparison.
