Check retro consoles and games before buying: functional tests, model comparisons, accessories and a transparent maximum purchase price.
What actually matters in this niche
A photograph of a powered-on console does not prove that its drive, controllers or save function work. Evaluate the specific device and its accessories, not just the console name. This is an editorial inspection guide, not a report of our own long-term or repair tests.

Check before buying
- Read the model number and region from the label. Nintendo confirms that Wii RVL-001 (EUR) supports GameCube discs and accessories, whereas RVL-101 (EUR) does not. Do not price different variants as if they were identical.
- Start from cold with a known compatible game and actually play it. Test picture, sound, buttons, sticks and the ports you need; record duration and results. A short test cannot rule out later faults.
- For disc drives, load a game and restart it. Where saving is supported and the required accessories are available, create a save and load it after a restart. Explicitly record functions you could not test as untested.
- List each included item: power supply, video cable, controller, storage and, where relevant, sensor bar, cases and manuals. Distinguish original and third-party accessories; price missing parts using real replacement offers.
- Visually inspect the case, contacts, battery compartments and cables, and photograph defects. Do not power on damaged equipment or power supplies for a purchase check. Do not assume you can repair faults without the appropriate skills.
- At pickup, record the model, included items, test date and known faults on the purchase receipt. In your resale listing, describe only the functions you have actually verified as tested.
Red flags
- Corrosion, moisture traces, exposed wiring or damaged power supplies: do not simply power up the device and assume a cheap repair.
- Intermittent disc reading, controller disconnections or saves that cannot be loaded. The purchase price needs to reflect the evidenced condition.
- A seller calls the device tested but only shows the home screen or declines an agreed functional check. That is missing evidence, not automatic proof of fraud.
- Unclear region, modifications or replacement parts. Do not infer compatibility or permitted use from case colour or installed games.
- The deal only works against the highest active asking price, without replacement costs, or by assuming untested functions definitely work.
Common marketplaces for comparison

Compare like-for-like sold prices
Separate console-only listings, tested bundles, faulty items and collector sets with original boxes. Match the model, region and accessories as closely as possible. A tested complete bundle is not a clean comparison for an untested console without a power supply.
Use sold comparables rather than only active asking prices. eBay Product Research also reports actual accepted Best Offer prices. Record the research date, period, number of useful matches, condition and shipping for each result. A few inconsistent sales indicate uncertainty, not a dependable price guarantee.
Choose a justified conservative sale-revenue assumption and also check a lower-revenue scenario. Specify whether buyer-paid postage is included, then subtract actual shipping costs exactly once. Hypothetical example: what can you afford to pay?
Every amount below is an assumption, not an observed retro-market price or a current eBay fee: EUR 85 total revenue including buyer-paid shipping, EUR 12 fees and other selling costs, EUR 8 postage plus packaging, EUR 10 missing accessories and EUR 20 desired remainder.
The maximum purchase price is 85 - 12 - 8 - 10 - 20 = EUR 35. Allowing another EUR 12 for repair risk reduces it to EUR 23. Revenue falling by EUR 12 also reduces the limit to EUR 23; if both happen, only EUR 11 remains for the purchase.
The desired EUR 20 is not guaranteed profit: labour, taxes, business overheads and additional risks have not been assessed here. Replace every assumption with your own research and the costs of your sales channel. If a material defect remains unexplained, walking away is an option instead of justifying the purchase with an optimistic resale price.
