DHL Päckchen or Paket: tracking, liability cover and choosing correctly
Quick answer: When should you choose Päckchen or Paket?
Choose DHL Paket if you need tracking and the carrier liability cover advertised up to EUR 500. The domestic consumer products Päckchen S and M do not include those services. See the DHL domestic shipping overview.
Päckchen can suit inexpensive, durable contents when you knowingly accept shipping without those services. For a sale, the method you agreed with the buyer also matters. A small box does not turn a promised tracked parcel into an untracked product.
This guide covers consumer shipments within Germany. Product details were checked on 10 October 2026. International products and business contracts can have different conditions.
Choose the service before comparing prices
Ask yourself three questions before buying a label:
- Do I need a visible shipping history for my own records or for communication with the buyer?
- How much could I replace out of my own pocket after a loss without making the sale problematic?
- Which shipping method did I already promise in the listing or the message history?
If you promised tracking, it should no longer be an optional saving when you buy the label. If you willingly send without tracking, explain that before the buyer purchases. An argument about what you meant by “parcel” can take more time than choosing the right service in the first place.
Liability cover is not an automatic payout
The advertised cover limit is not a blanket promise to reimburse every incident. DHL's domestic shipping terms set out permitted contents, sender obligations and exclusions. They also explain that ordinary transit estimates are not guaranteed delivery deadlines.
Keep the carrier contract separate from the handling of your sale. A DHL tracking status alone does not tell you how a marketplace will decide a dispute. Check that platform's current conditions separately rather than treating the word “insured” as a promise covering the entire transaction.
For particularly valuable contents, take another step: DHL offers additional transport insurance for parcels. Packaging, permitted values and handover have their own requirements. Check them before buying; selecting a larger parcel label does not by itself protect a higher item value.
A hypothetical case: Same box, different decision
Suppose you send durable clothing in a fully packed box measuring 32 x 22 x 8 cm with a total weight of 1.6 kg. It fits Päckchen S and also falls within the Paket 2 kg limits. These are assumptions for a worked example, not a shipment we tested. The basis is DHL's product dimensions.
For a deliberately untracked shipment of inexpensive contents, you could consider Päckchen. If you agreed to provide tracking, the same box points to Paket instead. Its geometry has not changed; the service you need determines the choice.
After repacking, it measures 32 x 22 x 11 cm, still weighing 1.6 kg. It no longer fits Päckchen S. Its dimensions and weight still fit Päckchen M or Paket 2 kg. Removing necessary cushioning just to squeeze into the smaller product would be the wrong shortcut.
Checklist before drop-off
- Read your shipping promise: Which service does the buyer actually expect?
- Pack appropriately: DHL recommends a sturdy outer box, cushioning on every side and filled empty spaces. Remove old labels and barcodes. Its packaging guidance explains how to prepare the shipment.
- Measure and weigh the complete shipment: Record three outside dimensions and the total weight. Measuring the item alone is insufficient.
- Confirm the product and current conditions: Compare the final DHL basket with your shipping promise. Our DHL prices and sizes guide explains the price tiers in more detail.
- Keep the records together: Save the label, any drop-off receipt, evidence of value and shipping expenses with the sale. A photo of the packed contents can supplement your records but does not replace any required evidence.
Next step: Enter the finished outside dimensions and total weight in the shipping calculator. Then compare the suitable products against your service requirements and confirm the rate directly with DHL.
Frequently asked questions
Does DHL Päckchen include tracking within Germany?
No. The regular consumer products Päckchen S and M do not offer it. A printed identifier does not change the service you booked.
Does DHL Paket cover every incident up to EUR 500?
No. Liability cover has conditions. The contents, packaging and applicable contract terms can matter when a particular claim is assessed.
Can I book a small parcel as Päckchen?
Only when its dimensions, weight and required service fit Päckchen. If you promised tracking, a small box is no reason to drop that service.
Which product should I choose for an item worth more than EUR 500?
First check whether the contents are permitted and eligible for additional transport insurance. Check the required handover method too, then choose the product.
