What does a DHL parcel calculator need?

Use the outside dimensions of the fully packed box, its total weight and the shipping service you need. A light parcel does not automatically qualify for the cheapest rate: a single oversized side can change the product you need.

This guide covers public single-shipment consumer rates within Germany, not business contracts, multipacks, international shipping or optional services. Prices and conditions were checked against the linked DHL pages on 11 October 2026. The examples are our hypothetical calculations, not reports of shipments we tested.

For Paket 5 kg and 10 kg, length + 2 x width + 2 x height must also stay within 300 cm. Paket 2 kg is online-only. Source: DHL domestic price list.

Two hypothetical product-selection examples

Example A: 34 x 24 x 9 cm, packed weight 1.4 kg. The box fits Päckchen S. If you need tracking, Paket 2 kg is the alternative among the products above, at an extra EUR 2.00. Decide which service you promise before the sale, not when buying the label.

Example B: 40 x 30 x 20 cm, packed weight 1.8 kg. The box is too tall for Paket 2 kg even though it weighs less than 2 kg. Among the products above, Paket 5 kg fits. Its length-plus-girth calculation is 40 + 2 x 30 + 2 x 20 = 140 cm. Selecting by weight alone would produce the wrong label.

Postage is not your entire shipping cost

Suppose the label costs EUR 6.19, the box EUR 0.65 and cushioning plus tape EUR 0.25. Your shipping cost is EUR 7.09. If the buyer pays EUR 6.19 for shipping, you cover the remaining EUR 0.90 before other selling costs. The material prices and buyer payment are assumptions for this example.

Keep the buyer's payment separate from your expenses. Count packaging once, not again within another flat postage allowance. For an eBay sale, the shipping calculator guide helps carry this shipping block into the full cost model. This example is not a calculation of taxable profit.

Checklist before buying a label

1. Cushion the item appropriately, fill empty space and close the box securely. Follow DHL's packaging guidance.
2. Then measure all three outside dimensions and weigh the complete parcel. Printed box dimensions can describe the inside; take your own measurements.
3. Check tracking, permitted contents and the liability cover you need. DHL lists tracking and liability up to EUR 500 for Paket products, unlike Päckchen. A liability limit does not guarantee payment for every loss; shipping conditions apply.
4. Confirm the final rate and any optional services in DHL's checkout before paying. Special shapes and restricted contents are outside this simplified table.
5. Keep the drop-off receipt, tracking number and shipping expenses with the sale so you can check the calculation afterwards.

Choose the product that fits the packed item and the service you promised, not simply the lowest number in the table.

Frequently asked questions

Does a parcel under 2 kg always fit Paket 2 kg?

No. The finished outside dimensions must fit too. Example B above is deliberately below the weight limit but too tall for that product.

Are these rates for shipments outside Germany?
